USD 500K Funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation to UNOPS in Pakistan

The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) is funding a pilot project with UNOPS titled ‘Sustainability & Decent Work in Pakistan’s PET Recycling Value Chain,’ providing USD 500K for implementation in Islamabad Capital Territory. This area generates over 3,300 tons of municipal solid waste daily, with around 79% recyclable.

Key activities include analysing challenges in the PET value chain, providing safety training for waste pickers, forming cooperatives, and conducting diagnostic studies.

Carlos Pagoaga, President of TCCF, emphasised the commitment to improving waste management and supporting informal waste pickers. Dr Faisal Hashmi from Coca-Cola Pakistan added that the project aims to create shared value in the community. UNOPS’ Jennifer Ankrom noted that the initiative would empower waste pickers with safer livelihoods, while ILO’s Geir Tonstol highlighted the need to improve working conditions.

With nearly 2 million tonnes of plastic waste generated annually in Pakistan and 86% of it improperly managed, this project aims to provide a model for sustainable waste management at the national level.
