Arts Council Karachi honours Ali Ahmed Khan with lifetime achievement award 2026

The Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, held the Ahfaz-ur-Rehman Awards for Courage of Expression and Freedom of the Press, honouring senior journalist Ali Ahmed Khan with the Lifetime Achievement Award 2026 at Auditorium II. The event featured a presentation on Ahfaz-ur-Rehman’s life and his battle for freedom of expression, along with reflections from labour leaders and journalists. A discussion titled “Struggle for Freedom of Expression in an Environment of Oppression” included insights from Mazhar Abbas, Fazil Jamili, Amber Shamsi, and Iqbal Khurshid.

Performers Asif, Alam, and KP showcased a musical dance based on Rehman’s poetry, while Wasatullah Khan and Nazeer Mahmood moderated the ceremony. In attendance were Arts Council President Ahmed Shah, Tauseef Ahmed Khan, and many journalists and writers. Awards were presented to Mass Communication students from the University of Karachi.

Ali Ahmed Khan was honoured for his journalistic contributions and struggle for press freedom. Mazhar Abbas discussed the challenges of journalism in oppressive times, while Fazil Jamili highlighted the resilience of the Karachi Press Club amidst increasing restrictions. Amber Shamsi noted the growing divisions in society and emphasised the importance of journalism in challenging power. Iqbal Khurshid spoke on the connection between struggle and hope, recalling past journalism movements.

In conclusion, Ali Ahmed Khan stated that journalism’s core duty is to connect voices and convey truth. At the same time, participants reaffirmed their commitment to the ongoing fight for journalism and freedom of expression.
