The diverse demography of Karachi always remains a challenge for uninterrupted and impartial policing yet its commendable the way various policing forces in the city and other parts of Sindh have dealt with the threat of Coronavirus, said Amir Ghauri, a veteran journalist, while hosting a web based ceremony.

The event projected and appreciated the winners of story writing competition under the initiative Police Media Sath Sath that has managed to create a conducive network among police, media and civil society.

Communication Research Strategies (CRS) launched this initiative to sustain the advocacy efforts taken by Police Awam Sath Sath, the umbrella initiative. Aniq Zafar, CEO CRS, while explaining the achievements of the program, said, “We have taken this initiative in the hope that masses can see police in more positive light through the power of media and civil society. It’s all about dialogue, coordination and organization and it’s a positive sign that stakeholders are willing to sit and talk out their differences and journalists are writing about police reforms”.

Athar Ali, the media strategy designer for this program introduced the winners of all three categories and explained the themes of their stories including print, electronic and digital. Print story of Hafeez Tunio (from Express Tribune) was declared the best by judges for its portrayal of courage shown by Sharafat Khan, the female SHO of the Pirabad police, who remained steadfast in front of an enraged crowd that was resisting the SOPs issued by government.

Zohaib Mansha (from Urdu Point) topped the web/digital category with his video on SSP Suhai Aziz from Sujawal Sindh who rescued a young woman named Najma. SSP Suhai came across a picture of Najma on social media, she found her and provided her shelter in a safe house, gave her clean clothes and good food to eat.

Faisal Ali Khan (from ARY News) bagged first prize for a detailed package on sacrifices of police men/women in Karachi during Covid-19.

“Such initiatives must be continued and we all have to contribute out of our comfort zones to be part of this change”, said Amir while concluding the event.
