Sightsavers Pakistan held a roundtable on climate-resilient inclusive education

Sightsavers Pakistan, in collaboration with Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), held a Roundtable Consultation on Climate-Resilient Inclusive Education, bringing together government, academia, and civil society to discuss how to enhance the education system’s response to climate risks while ensuring inclusion.

The consultation referenced two research studies funded by the Data and Research in Education – Research Consortium (DARE-RC), highlighting the negative impact of climate-related hazards like floods and heatwaves on educational continuity, particularly for girls and marginalized communities.

Dr. Zaigham Qadeer from the Pakistan Institute of Education emphasized the need for resilience in education against climate disruptions. Ms. Munazza Gillani from Sightsavers called for better coordination among organizations addressing climate change and education.

Research presenters from Sightsavers revealed that climate risks are recurring and affect attendance and learning outcomes. Dr. Fouzia Khan from the Sindh government stressed the necessity for institutionalized action, while Mr. Salman Ali from Punjab highlighted the need for collaboration among the education and disaster management sectors.

The consultation resulted in support for establishing a multi-sectoral working group on Climate-Resilient Inclusive Education and identified priority areas for collaboration, including policy development and the improvement of data systems. Dr. Zahid Majeed moderated the event, and Mr. Hafiz Inamullah emphasized a shared commitment to building a resilient education system.
