PNSC, under the directives of Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, organized the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, 2024, at KPT Staff College, with the theme “Contribution of seafarers in making the maritime sector a safer workplace.”
The Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, sent a message on the occasion that highlighted that our seafarers are ambassadors of our country, and their professional expertise has earned Pakistan a reputation as a significant player in the global maritime sector.
He reaffirmed the commitment to prioritizing the well-being and safety of seafarers. He said to recognize the importance of implementing measures to enhance your working conditions, provide access to essential services, and promote mental health support initiatives. Your welfare is paramount, and we are dedicated to ensuring that your rights are upheld and your voices heard.
He further said that unwavering support and advocacy for the rights and interests of Pakistani seafarers at all tiers. Let us strive to create an environment where you can thrive professionally and personally, knowing that your contributions are valued and appreciated.
The occasion highlighted the importance of the maritime industry in Pakistan’s economy and acknowledged the seafarers’ role in driving economic growth.
In his speech on behalf of Federal Minister Mr Arif Elahi, Ex-Chairman PNSC extended his heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the dedicated seafarers who work tirelessly to keep the wheels of global trade turning. Mr. Elahi said that we recognize the invaluable contribution of our brave seafarers who face challenging conditions at sea to ensure the safe transportation of goods and commodities. Their hard work and dedication are the backbone of our maritime industry; we are deeply grateful for their services, the chief guest added.
In 2010, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), designated 25 June as the International Day of the Seafarer in the Conference held at Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution seafarers from all over the world made to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
On the occasion, the Executive Director of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Capt. Mustafa Kizilbash, said that we are committed to ensuring the safety, security, and dignity of our seafarers and will continue to work vigorously to create a supportive environment for our maritime community.
Earlier chief guest hoisted the National Flag of Pakistan and distributed prizes among the best seafarers. The administration of Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority, Pakistan Marine Academy, Gwadar Port Authority and Shipping company’s representatives also attended the event.
While concluding the ceremony, the Honorable Chief Guest was invited to cut the cake of the Seafarers Day.
