Mera Karachi Group (MKG) organized a mangrove plantation drive at Toor Creek in the Indus Delta, with support from the Sindh Forest Department, Caritas Pakistan, and Ecolife. Over 60 participants, including volunteers and students from Rehri Goth, took part in the initiative to increase mangrove cover and raise awareness about protecting Karachi’s coastal ecosystem.

Mangroves serve as vital natural defenses for Karachi’s coastline, stabilizing soil, reducing erosion, and buffering against storm surges and flooding. With urbanization and climate change threatening these ecosystems, it’s crucial to maintain healthy mangrove forests to support coastal community resilience and biodiversity.

MKG emphasized the importance of involving local communities, particularly youth, in environmental conservation. The participation of students from Rehri Goth highlights the value of community-led initiatives. MKG believes that environmental education and action must go hand in hand, with long-term stewardship essential for mangrove survival.

MKG also called on the corporate sector to enhance their involvement in environmental initiatives, advocating for meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that extends beyond one-time donations. Businesses can support long-term programs, engage employees, and partner with local communities to create sustained environmental efforts.

The mangrove plantation is part of MKG’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about Karachi’s environmental challenges, with plans for a second drive in October.
