LUMS Energy Institute and Ministry of Energy organize workshop to train journalists on power sector basics

Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari emphasized the importance of accurate reporting on Pakistan’s power sector to combat public misconceptions about electricity pricing and reforms. Speaking at a workshop by the Lahore University of Management Sciences, he highlighted the government’s commitment to transparent communication and plans to transition 10 million consumers to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) this year.

Leghari announced that no new imported fuel-based Independent Power Producers (IPPs) would be established and that renegotiated agreements with existing IPPs would save consumers approximately Rs3.5 trillion over the next 10 to 15 years.

He assured that the new solar policy would not hinder solar adoption and that efforts are underway to provide affordable daytime electricity for industrial and commercial consumers. The workshop gathered journalists and media students to discuss topics like generation, transmission, tariffs, and market reforms in the power sector, featuring insights from energy experts.

Dr. Fiaz Ahmad Chaudhry emphasized the need for demand-side management and consumer-side reforms to address energy challenges. Participants engaged in a Q&A session to better understand the sector’s issues and opportunities. Energy Advisor Syed Faizan Ali presented future initiatives for improving efficiency and sustainability in Pakistan’s power sector.
