KPT has awarded a contract to National Dredging & Marine Services (NDMS) to commence dredging operations at Karachi Port, marking a significant step in increasing the depth of the Approach Channel, Tippu Sultan Channel and South Wharf, which will enable arrival and berthing of deep-draft vessels at Karachi Port; thus reducing freight and the cost of goods.
Furthermore, the mega project will also significantly contribute to the development of Pakistan’s indigenous dredging capability by investing in NDMS and strengthening the blue economy.
A ceremony was held at Karachi Port during which a dredging agreement was signed between Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and NDMS.
NDMS is a joint initiative of the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port; established in line with the approved recommendations of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms to build national capacity in dredging.
NDMS had earlier commenced dredging operations at Port Qasim in May this year.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman NDMS said that the establishment of NDMS was a major milestone towards developing national expertise in dredging, reducing reliance on foreign capacity, and improving port access for larger ships.
Chairman KPT highlighted that substantial investments have been made in the dredging Project being executed by NDMS and in the completed dredging projects of the Upper and Lower Harbours by the KPT partner, KGTL. This increase in depths would enhance port efficiency, support increased trade activity, contribute to foreign exchange savings and provide benefits to the business community.
