Knowledge in Islam shapes us, it is not produced: Dr. Lumbard

Dr Joseph E. B. Lumbard, in his lecture “Beyond Specialisation: An Islamic Vision of Education” at Habib University, emphasised that knowledge in Islam is not a human production but a transformative process that shapes individuals and societies. He criticised modern academia for fragmenting knowledge into isolated disciplines, arguing for a holistic approach that cultivates morally integrated individuals.

Discussing the impact of technology on cognition, he warned that reliance on digital tools reduces knowledge to mere information, leading to cognitive decline. Dr Lumbard highlighted Islamic philanthropy’s role in fostering institutional building and ethical leadership in higher education as a pathway for social transformation.

The event attracted a diverse audience and concluded with a Q&A addressing the relevance of Islamic intellectual traditions and contemporary challenges in higher education. Habib University’s lecture series aims to reorient Islamic philanthropy towards long-term educational investments, promoting a moral and social commitment to knowledge.
