In a significant development for the coastal town of Gadani, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, announced a groundbreaking project aimed at transforming the existing shipbreaking yard into a Model Green Yard.
During a high-level meeting held earlier this week, the minister revealed an allocation of 12 billion rupees dedicated to modernising the facility and promoting environmental sustainability. Speaking at the meeting, Minister Chaudhry emphasised the project’s focus on modern infrastructure, environmental protection, and safety standards.
“The Gadani project will align with global environmental and climate standards, ensuring that our operations are environmentally friendly,” he stated. Key components of the project include the construction of a 30-bed hospital, complete with residential facilities for doctors and nurses, to improve healthcare access for residents.
Furthermore, plans are in place to build a 32-kilometre road, schools, and parks in the area to enhance the community’s overall living standards. “We will also introduce labour colonies and clean water supply projects to support our workers,” Chaudhry added, highlighting the initiative’s commitment to community welfare. The planned improvements are expected to stabilise the annual production of 1.2 million tons of steel, significantly boosting local employment opportunities and economic growth.
To ensure the project’s success, Minister Chaudhry assured attendees that a robust system for transparency, monitoring, and timely completion would be implemented. Additionally, he confirmed that the project would fully comply with the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling.
“The revival of Gadani will not only contribute to environmental protection but will also position Pakistan as a regional hub for green ship recycling,” Chaudhry concluded, igniting enthusiasm among the participants. As the community prepares for this transformative project, many are hopeful that it will not only rejuvenate the local economy but also lay the groundwork for a sustainable future for Gadani and its residents.
