Fast-expanding Marine bunkering services through Karachi Port Trust by Vitol

In a significant advancement for the maritime industry, Karachi Port has successfully deployed internationally compliant bunker barges, enhancing the country’s energy security and operational efficiency. This development marks a key milestone, as the new bunker barges meet global maritime assurance requirements.

The initiative facilitates direct barge loading from Keamari Oil Terminals, effectively eliminating the need for trucking and paving the way for large-scale fuel deliveries. In conjunction with this, a transparent, structured bunker licensing regime has been introduced to streamline operations within the sector.

The deployment has garnered international attention, particularly with Vitol’s entry, the world’s largest independent energy trader. Vitol has commenced operations in Pakistan, adhering to the highest global standards, with an ambitious target to supply between 500,000 and 600,000 metric tons of fuel annually across Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and surrounding anchorage areas.

This expanded fuel portfolio now includes High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO), Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), and Low Sulfur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO), available for all visiting vessels. The operational improvements are expected to boost port efficiency, significantly reduce vessel turnaround times, and enhance the nation’s trade competitiveness.

Moreover, it is anticipated that 40-50% of domestic refineries’ fuel oil output will be utilised as bunker fuel, contributing to industrial and economic growth in Pakistan.

Looking ahead, plans are in place for expansion by 2026, including the development of additional berths and infrastructure to support 70 to 100 bunker operations per month. Vitol also plans to introduce an additional state-of-the-art vessel to launch bio-bunker deliveries in the second quarter of 2026.

This strategic initiative positions Pakistan’s seaports as emerging hubs in the Blue Economy, establishing bunkering as a core maritime service vital for competitive imports and exports. As Pakistan embarks on this promising journey, the enhanced capabilities at Karachi Port are set to play a crucial role in the nation’s economic landscape.
