Experts have advocated for a coordinated approach to battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid flexibility in Pakistan, as the country expands its solar and renewable energy sources. During a webinar organized by the Institute of Policy Studies, specialists discussed how energy storage can help shift surplus renewable energy to peak-demand hours, enhance grid efficiency, and improve overall system reliability.

Hamza Naeem highlighted the importance of flexibility due to increased solar penetration. Dr. Naveed Arshad noted that without adequate storage, electricity must be consumed as it’s produced, while Dr. Fiaz Chaudhry emphasized the potential of BESS to alleviate grid pressure by storing excess daytime solar energy for evening use.

Sameer Raza discussed the practical applications of BESS, including peak shaving, renewable integration, and community energy storage, while pointing out challenges related to financing and regulatory frameworks. Omar Malik shared that the Independent System and Market Operator views batteries as an opportunity to enhance the power system.

From a consumer perspective, Ammar Yasir mentioned rising electricity costs driving interest in solar and BESS solutions. Khalid Rahman concluded by emphasizing the need for governance that balances market forces and regulatory oversight, ensuring availability, accessibility, affordability, and reliability in the power sector.
