Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad today to assess the development of Pakistan’s blue economy policy.
Minister Chaudhry emphasised the urgent need for reforms in Pakistan’s blue economy sector, highlighting its untapped potential to boost the national economy significantly. “Pakistan’s maritime economy can earn $100 billion annually,” he stated, underlining the importance of fishing, tourism, and shipping sectors in multiplying revenue streams.
The global blue economy, which encompasses the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, has reached a staggering $1.5 trillion. As Pakistan seeks to enter this lucrative arena, Minister Chaudhry assured that all stakeholders would be consulted in the policy development process to ensure a well-rounded approach.
However, challenges remain, particularly the lack of modern technology within the maritime sector, which has hindered progress. “Addressing this gap is crucial for successfully implementing the new policy,” Chaudhry noted.
The proposed Blue Economy Policy aims to accelerate economic development and ensure environmental protection, marking a dual approach to maritime advancement. The Minister mentioned potential initiatives such as ship recycling and establishing green ports, which could generate additional income while promoting sustainability.
As the ministry advances with this ambitious policy, it is hoped that it will pave the way for a prosperous maritime future and elevate Pakistan’s position in the global blue economy landscape.
