Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, presented the second theatre play of its alumni series titled “Begum Jaan” at Studio II, Ahmed Shah Building. The play, written by renowned playwright Javed Siddiqui and directed by ACP’s sovapa alumna Alaiza Jawaid, captivated the audience with its compelling storyline and powerful performances.
The cast, including Alaiza Jawaid, Daniyal Naeem, and Farzeen Ejaz, delivered outstanding performances that earned loud applause and laughter from the audience throughout the show. “Begum Jaan” tells the story of a once-celebrated courtesan and artist admired by influential and wealthy individuals for her beauty and talent. However, as she grows older, those same admirers begin to ignore her.
The play highlights themes of loneliness, the decline of fame, and the search for dignity. Key characters include Begum Jaan, an aging but renowned singer; Zarina, her granddaughter; and Sanjay Pandey, an ambitious journalist. Sanjay seeks to establish his identity by uncovering the truth behind letters allegedly written to Begum Jaan by prominent personalities, including Abul Kalam Azad. The production was well-received for its emotional depth and meaningful narrative, leaving a lasting impression on theatre enthusiasts in attendance
