The establishment of the SAARC Chamber’s central secretariat in Pakistan is a positive step for regional trade, according to Rafiq Suleman, spokesperson of the Businessmen Panel (BMP) South and former Chairman of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan. He congratulated the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) leadership, particularly Vice President Anjum Nisar, on the inauguration of the headquarters in Islamabad.
Suleman highlighted that this development will promote regional trade, facilitate policy dialogue, and encourage research-based initiatives. He noted that intra-regional trade within SAARC is limited to only 5 per cent, despite significant potential. He expressed hope that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in easing tensions between Iran and the U.S. would enhance its regional importance, supported by the new SAARC infrastructure.
He emphasised South Asia’s vast consumer base and production capacity but pointed out its low economic integration. He compared SAARC’s 5 per cent intra-regional trade with ASEAN’s 36 per cent and the EU’s over 60 per cent, indicating the need to address structural gaps. Suleman urged SAARC governments to prioritise economic cooperation, reduce trade barriers, and improve connectivity, while collaborating in sectors like tourism, healthcare, and agriculture.
