Thar projects key to energy security and regional development: Minister Syed Nasir Shah

Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Sindh’s Minister for Energy, reiterated the government’s commitment to utilizing Thar coal resources for Pakistan’s energy security. During a visit to Thar Blocks I and II, he highlighted how these projects contribute significantly to the national energy mix.

At Thar Block II, the Minister discussed the Phase III expansion of the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), which aims to increase mining capacity from 7.6 to 11.4 million tons per annum, providing energy for around 4.5 million households. Local talent development is a priority, with 94% of the workforce from Sindh, including 60% from Thar, and over 2000 youth have received vocational training.

Minister Shah emphasized that government policies have stabilized the macroeconomic environment, attracting diverse investments. He also mentioned studies on coal gasification for fertilizer production and the upcoming Thar rail link for coal transportation.

Additionally, he inaugurated an electric vehicle (EV) charging station for 70-ton electric dump trucks at Block II mine and launched the second development phase of the Thar Foundation Hospital in Islamkot, which offers free healthcare services.
