SMHA organizes the largest mental health drive in Thar

The Sindh Mental Health Authority (SMHA), in collaboration with Thar Foundation, conducted mental health awareness sessions for over 1,000 community members in Thar Block II. Experts emphasized the significance of mental well-being, early diagnosis, and treatment. SMHA Chairman Dr. Karim Khawaja highlighted that mental health issues rank just after cardiovascular diseases in common health concerns and can have severe consequences if untreated.

He praised the Thar Foundation for supporting SMHA, particularly in launching a tele-counseling helpline connecting remote areas to psychiatrists. This initiative has notably increased outpatient attendance at Civil Hospital Mithi, helped dispel myths surrounding mental health, and reduced stigma.

Additionally, SMHA trained Lady Health Workers as first responders and conducted a Psychological Autopsy study— a first in South Asia. Dr. Karim mentioned that the provincial government is making efforts to improve mental healthcare services, providing free medications, but emphasized the need for stronger measures against substance abuse.

Farhan Ansari from Thar Foundation commended SMHA for focusing on youth, training teachers in mental health awareness, and promoting healthy activities through initiatives like the Sadiq Faqir Music Academy and the Thar Cricket Academy. Dr. Bharat stressed the importance of teacher training for early identification of mental health issues in children, while Dr. Laghari urged lifestyle reviews for better mental well-being. Secretary Dr. Syed Zafar Mehdi also participated in the sessions.
