Sightsavers and the EU to promote disability inclusion and gender equality in Pakistan

The European Union has pledged 1 million euros to fund a 3-year project, Beyond Barriers, implemented by Sightsavers and key civil society partners, aimed at advancing women’s rights and economic empowerment for women with disabilities. The launch event took place in Islamabad.

Complemented by 5% co-funding from Sightsavers and collaboration with the Potohar Organisation for Development Advocacy (PODA) and Awaz Foundation Pakistan (AwazCDS), the project aims to strengthen women’s groups and build coalitions for long-term disability inclusion.

Mr. Jeroen Willems, Head of Co-operation, EU, praised the initiative, highlighting the EU’s commitment to inclusion as central to its development cooperation. He expressed hopes for significant advancements in combating gender-based violence and empowering women with disabilities by the project’s end.

For the next three years, Beyond Barriers will enhance the capacity of women-led organisations to aid women, particularly those with disabilities, in addressing GBVH and accessing inclusive job opportunities. The project will collaborate with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and employers to create safe workplaces.

Ms. Munazza Gillani, Director Pakistan & Middle East at Sightsavers, noted the initiative as a key step towards dismantling barriers for women with disabilities, enabling civil society to effect meaningful change.

The project will also advocate for the improved implementation of national policies related to women’s rights and disability inclusion, utilizing participatory research to influence policymaking and enhance support services for survivors of GBVH.

With this launch, Sightsavers and the EU embark on a partnership to promote disability inclusion and gender equality in Pakistan, aiming for a more inclusive future.
