Power generation up by 6.5% YoY during 10MFY21 in Pakistan

Power generation is up by 25% YoY to 10,481 GWh (14,087 MW) during Apr’21, compared to 8,391 GWh (11,278 MW) during Apr’20. The rise in generation is witnessed due to low base and higher generation on gas due to suspension of gas to captive power plants.

Major contributors during Apr’21 were Hydel (Share: 25%), RLNG (Share: 25%), Coal (Share: 23%), Gas (Share: 12%), Nuclear (Share: 10%), Wind (Share: 2%), FO (Share: 1%) and Bagasse (Share: 0.7%).

During Apr’21, power generation from all sources has increased except from wind-based generation which is down by 15% YoY.

During Apr’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 21% YoY to PKR 5.57/KWh mainly due to rise in gas and coal based cost of generation.

RLNG based generation up by 17% YoY during 10MFY21

During 10MFY21, power generation increased by 6.5% YoY to 102,852 GWh (14,097 MW) compared with 96,563 GWh (13,235 MW) during 10MFY20.

Major contributors during 9MFY21 were: Hydel (Share: 30%), Coal (Share: 22%), RLNG (Share: 19%), Gas (Share: 13%), Nuclear (Share: 8%) and FO (Share: 4%).

During 10MFY21, gas and wind-based generation is down by 8% YoY and 6% YoY, respectively.

During 10MFY21, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 5.8% YoY to an average of PKR 4.61/KWh mainly due to rise in hydel-based and nuclear-based generation.

Fuel Cost up by 20.6% YoY during Apr’21

The rise in fuel cost during Apr’21 was led by the following reasons:

Coal-based cost of generation was up by 25% YoY to PKR 8.01/KWh during Apr’21 due to 49% YoY rise in coal prices.

Gas-based cost of generation was also up by 17.1% YoY to PKR 7.46/KWh during Apr’21.

Nuclear-based cost of generation increased by 10.8% YoY to PKR 1.11/KWh during Apr’21.

Wind-based generation is down by 15% YoY during Apr’21.
