Power Generation up by 10.8% during 8MCY21 in Pakistan

Power generation is up by 9.9% YoY to 16,078 GWh (21,610 MW) during Aug’21, compared to 14,630 GWh (19,664 MW) during Aug’20. The rise in generation is witnessed due to higher generation of FO, Nuclear, Wind, Bagasse, Solar and Hydel.

Major contributors during Aug’21 were Hydel (Share: 35%), RLNG (Share: 18%), Coal (Share: 14%), Nuclear (Share: 10%), FO (Share: 10%), Gas (Share: 8%), Wind (Share: 3%), and Solar (Share: 0.4%).

During the month, FO, Nuclear, Wind, Bagasse, Solar and Hydel based power generation up by 105% YoY, 100% YoY, 77% YoY, 20% YoY, 12% YoY and 2% YoY, respectively. However, HSD, Coal, Gas, and RLNG based generation was down by 80% YoY, 9% YoY, 6% YoY and 5% YoY respectively.

During Aug’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 57% YoY to PKR 6.41/KWh mainly due to rise in RLNG, coal, FO and gas based cost of generation. However hydel, Solar and Wind based generation were higher compared to same month last year.

Fuel Cost up by 57% YoY during Aug’21

The rise in fuel cost by 57% YoY during Aug’21 was led by the following reasons:

RLNG-based cost of generation increased by 91% YoY to PKR 13.44/KWh due to 103% YoY rise in RLNG prices to PKR 2,174/mmbtu.

Coal-based cost of generation was also up by 50% YoY to PKR 9.06/KWh during Aug’21 due to 143% YoY rise in coal prices.

FO-based cost of generation increased by 49% YoY to PKR 18.24/KWh due to 50% YoY rise in FO prices.

Gas-based cost of generation was also up by 18% YoY to PKR 8.31/KWh.
