Pakistan’s Govt moves to curb overfishing, promote sustainable Tuna harvesting

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized his commitment to sustainable fisheries management and responsible tuna harvesting on World Tuna Day, advocating for tuna conservation. He highlighted the significance of tuna for global food security and called for collaboration among governments, industries, and consumers.

Pakistan has made notable progress in fisheries conservation, securing a 25,000-metric-tonne quota from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, which is expected to generate about $200 million in exports. Despite over 45,000 tonnes caught annually, many remain unregulated. The government is addressing this through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, which aims to improve regulations and revenues.

Chaudhry also mentioned Pakistan’s leadership role in global fisheries governance and efforts to phase out harmful fishing practices in favor of selective techniques. He noted that improvements in export infrastructure and reforms are boosting certification revenues and enhancing Pakistan’s export capacity, particularly to Europe. The minister concluded that sustainable practices and strong partnerships will drive long-term economic growth and environmental protection for Pakistan’s tuna sector.
