Pakistan’s first mangrove biodiversity park opens in Karachi

The Mangrove Biodiversity Park, located along Korangi Creek in Karachi, was designed by environmentalist Shah Murad Aliani and developed by TPL Developments in collaboration with architect Tariq Alexander Qaiser.

Covering 50 hectares, this park aims to raise awareness about Pakistan’s coastal ecosystems. Established in partnership with the Sindh Forest Department and sponsored by TPL Properties, the project features an eco-sensitive design that utilizes 80% recycled materials, including floating pathways and a floating education center.

Home to over 72 bird species and various marine life, the park serves as a hub for education and research, hosting school trips and corporate initiatives while employing and training local community members. Karachi’s Mayor Murtaza Wahab emphasized the park’s role in reclaiming the coastal belt and promoting a greener future.

The initiative embodies public-private collaboration and aligns with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, showcasing how conservation and recreation can coexist. The Mangrove Biodiversity Park stands as a testament to the importance of protecting coastal environments and supporting local livelihoods.
