Pakistani freelancers earned over $500 million in foreign exchange during the first half of the 2025-26 financial year, a remarkable 58% year-on-year growth, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. This growth highlights Pakistan’s emergence as a competitive hub for freelancing, particularly in software development, digital marketing, and graphic design.
The government is actively facilitating freelancers through improved digital infrastructure, affordable broadband, and simplified payment mechanisms. Notably, freelancers can maintain foreign exchange accounts and retain up to 50% of their earnings in dollars, with a minimal tax of just 0.25%.
The freelancer community in Pakistan is estimated at 2.37 million, contributing significantly to the country’s service exports and creating job opportunities. Stakeholders believe that sustained policy support and investment in digital skills could propel freelance earnings to over a billion dollars by the end of the financial year. The statement was released by the Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) with the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication’s approval.
