Pakistan recorded a current account deficit (CAD) of $874 million in the first quarter of FY27, up from $755 million in the same period last year, as higher imports outweighed gains in exports and remittances, according to a report by AHL Research. The country posted a current account deficit of $356 million in September 2026, against a surplus of $133 million in September 2025 and a deficit of $73 million in August 2026.

AHL Research noted that total exports rose 15.5% year-on-year to $3.9 billion in September, while imports rose faster, 23.2%, to $7.4 billion. Monthly, exports rose 19.5%, while imports climbed 12%.

During 1QFY27, exports increased 11% to $11.2 billion from $10.1 billion a year earlier, while imports surged 15% to $21.3 billion from $18.6 billion.

Workers’ remittances remained a key support for the external account, rising 13% YoY to $3.6 billion in September. Cumulatively, remittance inflows reached $10.9 billion in 1QFY27, up 14% from $9.5 billion in the same period last year.

The primary income deficit widened to $792 million in September from $683 million a year earlier and $679 million in August, while secondary income increased 14% YoY to $3.9 billion.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s financial account recorded a $4.66 billion deficit in September 2026, compared with a $71 million surplus in September 2025 and a $329 million deficit in August 2026.

According to AHL Research, the latest figures indicate continued pressure on the country’s external account despite healthy growth in exports and remittances, with rising import demand remaining the key challenge.
