On the occasion of Global Zero Waste Day, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry underscored the importance of this year’s theme, “Food Loss and Waste”, for Pakistan. He revealed that the country faces a significant challenge: 20 to 30 per cent of seafood is lost annually, posing serious risks to both the economy and the environment.
The Minister emphasized that reducing seafood waste is a national priority, as it directly impacts livelihoods, sustainability, and economic growth. “Seafood loss is a major threat to our economy and environment. Efforts are underway to minimize this waste, which will ultimately benefit both ecological preservation and economic stability,” he said.
To address the issue, Chaudhry announced the launch of a national digital application for the fisheries sector, “Mahi Dost”, designed to support waste reduction and strengthen the industry. He noted that the app will play a vital role in stabilizing the economy and modernizing fisheries operations.
Highlighting the sector’s importance, the Minister stated that Pakistan’s fisheries industry provides employment to 1.5 million people, making reforms and digital innovation essential for sustainable growth.
