Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) has announced a landmark breakthrough with the confirmation of lithium in formation water at concentrations comparable to higher-tier lithium-bearing geothermal brines reported internationally, including projects currently under commercial development in Europe and North America.
The discovery was made through advanced geochemical analysis of produced formation water during the successful testing of a high-temperature geothermal well under OGDC’s pilot geothermal program. This represents the first confirmed occurrence of lithium-bearing geothermal brines of this nature in Pakistan and highlights the country’s emerging potential in the critical minerals sector.
Lithium is a cornerstone of the global energy transition, serving as a key raw material for electric vehicle batteries, grid-scale energy storage systems, and a wide range of next-generation clean technologies.
