Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF) President Mian Zahid Hussain has said national security and sovereignty must take precedence over commercial interests, supporting the temporary suspension of trade through Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan to curb terrorism and smuggling.

He noted that Pakistani and Iranian officials had described the disruption as temporary and linked to security and technical concerns. While bilateral trade with Iran supports exporters, transporters and border communities, he warned that prolonged disruptions could create LPG supply issues and financial losses for businesses.

Mian Zahid proposed a grace period for trade restrictions, clear guidelines for traders, and special arrangements for stranded cargo and perishable goods. Citing reports that around 2,000 trucks were stranded on both sides of the border, he said delays were putting heavy financial pressure on traders, especially small businesses.

He urged the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Commerce, FBR and the Balochistan government to establish a joint coordination mechanism, facilitate lawful consignments where security permits, and explore alternative trade routes and relief measures. He emphasized that once adequate safeguards are in place, lawful trade should be restored promptly to support employment, economic stability and exports.
