Marine tourism could become a key driver of the blue economy: Junaid Anwar Chaudhry

Pakistan has significant potential for marine tourism, which could enhance the country’s blue economy, according to Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. Speaking at the launch of a coastal cruise service, he emphasized the government’s efforts to transform Karachi into a modern maritime hub by expanding port infrastructure, logistics, and tourism.

The coastline along the Arabian Sea offers attractions like beaches and islands, yet remains underdeveloped due to insufficient infrastructure and environmental challenges. Chaudhry noted that cruise services could attract domestic and international tourists, stimulating investment in the tourism sector.

He mentioned ongoing projects, including a maritime industrial complex and shipbuilding facilities, aimed at establishing Karachi Port as a major transshipment hub. He stressed that maritime development should encompass tourism and other economic activities to create jobs and diversify coastal economies.

However, he acknowledged the need for sustainable management of coastal ecosystems and improved infrastructure to balance economic growth with environmental protection.
