KPT has surpassed its all-time container handling record in he fiscal year 2024-25

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) concludes the fiscal year 2024-25 with a record cargo handling performance, achieving a remarkable milestone of 54 million tons at Karachi Port.

The Karachi Port Trust has successfully concluded the fiscal year 2024-25, achieving an impressive cargo handling milestone of 54 million tons and surpassing its all-time container handling record with the processing of 2.65 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). This exceptional growth can be attributed to the dynamic leadership of the Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, as well as the Transition Management Committee of KPT. Their efforts have enabled Karachi Port to leverage the surge in both imports and exports, thereby enhancing national trade and economic activity.

A comprehensive analysis of the Karachi Port’s outstanding performance in handling export and import cargoes during the recently concluded fiscal year. There was a notable increase of 4.45% in total cargo handling compared to the previous fiscal year, 2023-24, when the port managed 53.95 million tons. The breakdown shows that the port handled 41.68 million tons of dry cargo, marking a 3.57% increase, and 12.28 million tons of liquid bulk cargo, reflecting a 7.56% growth during 2024-25.

Further details indicate that export cargo handling concluded with an impressive growth rate of 6.49%, totalling 20.02 million tons by the end of the fiscal year. Imports also performed well, recording a growth of 3.28% from the previous year to close at 33.93 million tons.

In terms of dry cargo exports, handling reached 18.91 million tons, a 7.06% increase from the previous year, largely due to the significant handling of clinker, rice, and talc lumps, among other goods. Meanwhile, dry cargo imports reached 22.77 million tons, a 0.81% increase from last year, driven primarily by the handling of soybeans and yellow peas. An audit of liquid bulk imports revealed that the port managed 11.16 million tons during the fiscal year, representing an 8.66% increase, primarily due to the handling of crude oil, palm oil, base oil, chemicals, soybean oil, and canola oil.

Container handling at Karachi Port reached a historic high of 2.65 million TEUs during the fiscal year 2024-25, driven by increased trade activities enabled by the government’s favourable trade policies.

Additionally, the movement and handling of vessels at Karachi Port increased by 11% by the end of the fiscal year. Out of a total of 1,943 boats handled, the port managed 1,093 container ships, 218 bulk carriers, 180 general cargo ships, and 452 liquid bulk tankers.

The Karachi Port Trust is committed to fully complying with the directives of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and is well-positioned to support the country’s speedy economic recovery.
