Sheikh Umer Rehan, President of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), expressed serious concerns regarding the seizure and detention of goods transport containers in Islamabad.
He emphasized the need for the government to restore the smooth flow of commercial activities and supply chains, as transporters have faced significant financial losses due to delays lasting nearly 20 days. Rehan highlighted that detaining containers disrupts trade and the movement of essential goods, particularly perishables, which could lead to higher prices.
He acknowledged the right to protest but stressed they shouldn’t disrupt industry and trade. He proposed coordination with shipping companies to use empty containers and called for a transparent compensation mechanism for affected transporters. He urged the government to prioritize the continuity of business activities and economic stability amid political challenges, reinforcing that the business community is essential to the national economy and should not be impacted by political disputes.
Rehan expressed hope that the government would address these concerns and work to normalize supply chains and transportation of essential goods.
