Karachi Port Trust is advancing a comprehensive transformation of the port ecosystem, with a focus on deeper and more efficient navigation, modern equipment, digitalisation, selective AI integration and continuous human-capital development
As part of this broader modernisation drive, Hutchison Ports Pakistan – SAPTL has outlined a US$76 million investment programme to modernise and expand operations at the country’s only deep-water container terminal. The programme represents a phased transition towards more automated, electric and environmentally sustainable cargo-handling operations
During his discussion with Chairman KPT, Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, SI(M), S.Bt (Retd.), CEO SAPTL–Hutchison Ports, Mr. C.S. Kim, shared the implementation roadmap. The programme is already underway, with 10 e-trailers arriving in August 2026, followed by 20 e-trucks in October 2026. In 2027, the terminal is scheduled to receive 2 remote-controlled quay cranes and 6 remote-controlled RTGCs in July 2027, along with 50 e-trucks and 40 e-trailers by mid-2027. A further 11 remote-controlled RTGCs are planned for deployment in May 2028.
