Glossary of key terms:
- Download speed: The rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device, usually measured in megabits per second (Mb/s). Download speeds above 25 Mb/s are considered excellent and enable activities such as 4K video streaming. Speeds between 10 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s are sufficient for HD streaming. Speeds below 10 Mb/s still support general internet use, including email, music streaming, and social media.
- Upload speed: The rate at which data is sent from a user’s device to the internet.
- Latency: Refers to the delay or time required for data to travel from the source to the destination within a network. Latency: 0–30 ms is considered excellent and enables real-time interaction. 31–100 ms supports optimal internet performance with minimal delay. Above 101 ms, users may experience challenges with real-time online interactions.
- Browsing performance: A measure of how quickly and efficiently websites load and can be navigated. A score between 75% and 100% means pages load almost instantly. Scores between 50% and 75% are sufficient for general browsing. Below 50% may result in slower browsing experiences.
- Streaming quality: The clarity and smoothness of video and audio content streamed over the internet. Streaming: a score between 75% and 100% indicates smooth streaming. Scores between 50% and 75% are sufficient for YouTube streaming. Below 50% may result in reduced video quality.
