Eleven legal firms have been honored with the Islamic finance industry’s most prestigious accolades, the IFN Law Awards 2020, for their outstanding achievements in Shariah finance. The IFN Law Awards, by renowned Islamic finance media company Islamic Finance news (IFN), are the industry’s standard of Islamic finance legal excellence known for their independence, impartiality and inclusivity.

Covering activities from the 1st July 2019 to the 30th June 2020, competition for the awards this year was exceptionally tight with law firms demonstrating dynamism amid unprecedented times triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Submissions from Magic Circle firms, white-shoe law firms, regional leaders and local heavyweights were received from all over the world. For the first time since its launch in 2011, no firm won more than a single category in the IFN Law Awards.

The winners of the 11 categories are: Allen & Overy for its work in Arbitration, Insolvency & Restructuring; Herbert Smith Freehills for Asset Management & Islamic Funds; Norton Rose Fulbright for Banking & Finance; Helmy, Hamza & Partners for Capital Markets;

Adnan Sundra & Low for Energy & Natural Resources; Dentons for ESG, Green & SRI; Simmons & Simmons for Fintech; Addleshaw Goddard for Mergers & Acquisitions; Al Busaidy, Mansoor Jamal & Co for Offshore Finance; Clifford Chance for Project Finance; and Trowers & Hamlins for Real Estate.

Clifford Chance also took home the coveted Best Law Firm of the Year title. “What makes a law firm stand out? This question has no clear answer. Magic Circle and white-shoe firms are present on the most prestigious and often complex deals. They might even see more deal flow. Mid-market firms and regional champions pierce their armor with spectacular achievements, fresh ideas and a growing market presence. Each year, we step back, clear our lenses and hear from the leading personalities, observe the great teams and read the abundant submissions and elaborate arguments about the fascinating achievements of each firm,” noted the IFN Law Awards Board, an independent panel of industry experts.

The winners will be celebrated at the IFN Awards Ceremonies which are scheduled to take place in Dubai next March and Kuala Lumpur in April 2021.
