Malik Sher Khan, Chief Executive of Shaheen Group of Companies and Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA), emphasized the critical role of oil and goods transporters in the national economy, as many families depend on this sector. At a Shaheen Group ceremony, he noted that rising petroleum prices have severely impacted transport operations, with around 70% currently halted. If the situation continues for 15 more days, an additional 25% to 30% could shut down.
Malik highlighted the strain on transport costs affecting the supply chain for essential goods. Despite ongoing protests by Jamaat-e-Islami against fuel price hikes, he criticized the government for inadequate action and for introducing a fuel relief scheme without consulting transporters. He also pointed to inconsistent tax rates for transporters, which complicate their financial burden. He warned that neglecting this vital sector risks supply chain disruptions and inflation, urging the government to provide immediate petroleum relief and a comprehensive policy framework for transporters.
