As per the PSX notice, ThalNova Power Thar (Private) Limited (TN) has achieved Commercial Operation Date (CoD) effective from Feb 17, 2023. TN is a joint venture between The Hub Power Company Limited (via Hub Power Holdings Limited), Thal Power (Private) Limited, Nova Powergen Limited, CMEC ThalNova Power Investments Limited, and Descon Engineering Limited. TN owns a 330MW mine-mouth coal-fired power plant at Thar Block-II and also comes under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The addition of TN in the national grid will reduce the dependency of the country on the imported fuel and bring down the overall fuel cost. Amongst the coal plants, Engro Powergen Thar Limited, Thar Energy Limited and Thar Coal Block-1 Power Generation Company are already producing electricity on local coal and their average fuel cost is PKR ~3.25/KWh while the fuel cost of imported coal-based power plant is PKR ~22.53/KWh.
