Garbage collection is getting better in Karachi says MD SSWMB

Managing Director of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Tuaha Ahmed Farooqui, during a meeting at Korangi Association of Trade & Industry (KATI) on Tuesday, disclosed “80 pc of garbage form city is being collected on daily basis and situation of garbage cleaning is getting better gradually”.

MD SSWMB also approved to take charge of Garbage Transfer Stations(GTSs) established by KITE in Korangi Industrial Area.

Prior to this President KATI Tariq Malik welcomed Tuaha Ahmed Farooqui and other officials of SSWMB at KATI. On this occasion Senior Vice President of KATI Salman Aslam, Vice President Junaid Naqi, Chairman & CEO KITE DMC Zubair Chaya, Former Presidents of KATI Gulzar Firoz, Farhan-ur-Rehman and others also expressed their views.

President KATI Tariq Malik said that cleanliness of city gets better but the situation is not satisfactory. He said that efforts of Tuaha Farooqui to manage industrial waste were commendable and KATI is ready to cooperate in this regard, at every possible level. SVP KATI Salman Aslam said that we are ready to play our role for industrial garbage management in Korangi Industrial Area as the board MD paying his full attention to the issue. Zubair Chaya told that KITE has established several GTS in KIA after acquiring orders form Supreme Court and modalities were being agreed, but this system didn’t work. He said that Garbage from industry was brought to GTSs but it wasn’t transferred to landfill sites, due to this the GTSs become nonfunctional. Chaya insisted that permanent GTS at EBM causeway wouldn’t be acceptable for KATI, due to several environmental hazards and potential mismanagement.

While responding to different queries MD SSWMB Tuaha Ahmed Farooqi Said that the board is ready to manage GTSs established by KITE in Korangi Industrial Area and notification for this will be issue soon. He assured that the board will provide transportation facility to shift the collected garbage form these GTSs to the dumping site, while industries would be responsible for bringing their waste to the GTS. He told the meeting that the board has acquired NOC from Korangi DMC and an agreement of garbage management in the area would be approved soon. Farooqi said that the board is now focusing on its monitoring system, GPS Tracking system are being installed in most of Vehicles, engaged in garbage collection and transfer to landfill sites. He said that SSWMB has clearly told the Water Commission that garbage dumping at the Nalas or sewerage system, and setting fire on garbage piles never a policy of the board and we have denied our involvement in any such activity.
