COVID ’19 – Is plasma treatment really effective in Pakistan?

Ever since the COVID’19 has impacted Pakistan, there has been an utter chaos and an overwhelming uncertainty as the fear of death hover over the corona patients. What makes it most fatal – is that no proper drug or vaccine has been developed at all.

However, as the scientists are working there heads off to develop a vaccine, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is using a treatment that has worked during previous outbreaks: transfusion of plasma from recovered patients to the severely ill.

Those who have recovered from the virus have developed antibodies in their blood that fight infections, known as “convalescent plasma”. The blood plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients contains antibodies that can fight the novel coronavirus.

Although the plasma treatment is not a very promising strategy but the doctors are utilizing this option since the development of a vaccine is more than a year away.

Scrutinizing the situation, the doctors in Pakistan are looking forward to plasma treatment. After receiving the blood donation from our fully recovered patient Yahya Jaffri, Dr Saqib Ansari who is a noted hematologist stated that,” This young man, Yahya Jaffri, has come forward to donate his blood for the extraction of plasma, which can be transfused to a critical patient of COVID-19 as per the advice a physician and health authorities. We urge the health authorities in Sindh to formulate a policy in this regard and issue guidelines so that this method of treatment could be used in Pakistan, which is being used in many countries, including the United States,”
