Chairman WAPDA Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed (Retd) visited Tarbela Dam to review the progress of the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5 HPP) and to witness the testing of the Low Level Outlet (LLO) of the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project (T4 HPP).
Accompanied by Chairman IRSA Amjad Saeed and other officials, he received updates on T5 HPP’s various components, including the Intake Structure and Power House. The project has a generation capacity of 1530 MW, with funding from the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Upon completion, Tarbela’s capacity will increase from 4888 MW to 6418 MW.
At T4 HPP, he observed the commissioning of the LLO to meet IRSA’s water release demands for the Kharif season. The project began generating electricity in March 2018 and has supplied 33.254 billion units to the National Grid. He also discussed the Operation and Maintenance of Tarbela Dam, noting it has released over 419 MAF of water for agriculture and provided $460 billion in economic benefits to Pakistan since 1974. Key WAPDA officials were present during the visit.
