Byco wins 18th Annual Environment Excellence Awards 2021

Byco Petroleum Pakistan Limited (BPPL), Pakistan’s largest oil refining company by capacity, has won the Environment Excellence Award at the 18th Annual Environment Excellence Awards held at a local hotel in Karachi. The chief guest on the occasion was the provincial Minister for Public Health Engineering and Local Government Mr. Nasir Hussain Shah, who presented the Environment Excellence Award to Manager Byco Environment Health & Safety, Atif Waheed.

The National Forum for Environment & Health thoroughly assessed and examined Byco’s operations and facilities and the refinery was chosen as a special winner for meeting local and international standards of Environment Protection and Health Practices.

Byco has planted thousands of trees over the last several years at and around its refinery and in Karachi as well. The Company’s concern for the environment is not limited to what is on land but also extends to water. Since its operation also takes place on the sea through Pakistan’s first and only Floating Liquid Boat also known as the Single Point Mooring or SPM, the Company has enforced stringent policies to ensure the protection of the marine environment. The underwater pipeline has now become a home to many diverse species of marine life. The solid structure has provided a perfect environment for the development of artificial coral reefs, which has attracted several species of fish that feed on the corals, developing a self-sustaining microclimate. The artificial coral reef on Byco’s sub-sea pipeline helps maintain a healthy ecosystem and gives rise to marine biodiversity. These were cited as key factors in Byco winning the Annual Environment Excellence Award this year.

Mr. Azfar Saeed Baig, Vice President – Byco Petroleum Pakistan, said, “This recognition reassures our vision of being compliant with all relevant national and international environment and health protocols and procedures at all our facilities. We take pride in being at the forefront in supporting the challenging national environment and are committed to continue playing this key role.”
