BL Microfinance Bank & SUPARCO expand satellite-based Agri-financing in Punjab

HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB), in partnership with the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), is expanding its Climate-Smart Agri-Financing initiative to farmers across Punjab. This marks a significant move towards transforming agricultural finance through satellite data intelligence and technology-driven risk assessment.

The collaboration brings together SUPARCO’s satellite remote-sensing capabilities and HBL MfB’s agricultural financing expertise. This expanded initiative will leverage satellite data and crop monitoring to strengthen the Bank’s agriculture portfolio resilience.

Mr. Amir Khan, President & CEO of HBL MfB, stated, “Pakistan’s farmers face significant challenges from climate change. Our partnership with SUPARCO enables us to integrate satellite intelligence into agricultural financing, helping us make informed and timely financing decisions.”

Mr. Zafar Iqbal from SUPARCO noted the organization’s experience in agricultural monitoring through satellite technology and machine learning. SUPARCO’s Space4Climate initiative will further support risk assessments for climate-related hazards, aiding HBL MfB’s agri-lending process.

Together, the collaboration aims to advance a data-driven and climate-resilient approach to agricultural finance, promoting informed financing and greater resilience in Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
