The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi held a ceremony honouring journalist Afzal Sherwani at Haseena Moin Hall, presided over by Shaista Zaidi. Notable speakers included Ghazi Salahuddin, Fatima Hasan, Tauseef Ahmed Khan, and Afzal’s daughter, Anita, who shared heartfelt memories.
Shaista emphasised the importance of discussion and tolerance, while Ghazi recalled Sherwani’s influential role in Urdu debates and literature. Tauseef praised Sherwani’s contributions to progressive thought, and Anita reflected on her father’s encouragement of young writers.
Fatima described Sherwani as a humble friend known for his honesty, while Nazir Mahmood noted his critical insights and commitment to language. Shamim Khan highlighted Sherwani’s multifaceted personality and creativity, recalling performances of his songs.
Waris and Shahab Karamat spoke about his inspirational presence and mentorship in Urdu literature. The event concluded with appreciation from Sherwani’s wife.
