Al-Shifa surgeons restore vision of 101-year-old patient

Al-Shifa Trust surgeons have restored vision to a 101-year-old patient, Raza Khan, who had dense cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Despite several specialists declining the case due to high risk, the surgery was successfully performed at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi under the care of Dr. Sabeehuddin.

The procedure was meaningful as Mr. Khan was a friend of the trust’s founder. His family had faced rejection from other ophthalmologists due to his age and retinal issues. Post-surgery, he regained enough vision to recognize family members and navigate independently, marking a significant achievement in geriatric eye surgery.

Al-Shifa Trust runs six hospitals across Pakistan and is building a seventh in Lahore, set to open in 2027, with about 80 percent of patients receiving free or subsidized care. This success is crucial amid the national eye health crisis, where approximately 2.7 million people are blind due to cataracts, with surgical coverage notably low in rural areas. This milestone highlights the growth of philanthropic healthcare in Pakistan.
