Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Wednesday named environmental activist Almas Kasmani as Ambassador for the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) for her efforts to restore mangroves along the country’s coastline.

Speaking at a certificate distribution ceremony, Junaid Chaudhry hailed Kasmani, a resident of Rehri Goth and founder of Saltwater Marina, as an “inspiring environmental champion” for her work in mangrove restoration, community workshops, biodiversity documentation, youth-led plantation drives, eco-tourism promotion, and representing Pakistan at international climate forums.

Kasmani has already restored 4,000 mangrove plants and set an ambitious target of 100,000 more next year, with suitable coastal areas already identified, the minister said.

Junaid Chaudhry presented Kasmani and her team with shields and certificates, recognising their contributions to marine conservation and promotion of the blue economy. The minister praised Karachi Port Trust (KPT)’s female employees, who worked alongside male colleagues over the Eid holidays to keep port operations running smoothly and bolster the maritime sector. He said positive transformations are beginning to surface in coastal regions, highlighting progress in maritime and environmental initiatives.

Junaid Chaudhry emphasised that women’s contributions are proving instrumental in promoting the sustainable use of water resources. This development underscores growing community involvement in conservation efforts along the coastline, he added.
