Pakistan-Malaysia Friendship Association (PMFA) President Shahid Javed Qureshi has urged the government to review the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA) to improve market access, boost exports, and attract investment.
He emphasized that stronger economic ties with Malaysia could help Pakistan expand its presence in ASEAN markets. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $1.55 billion in 2025, but significant potential remains for growth in trade, investment, and business partnerships. Qureshi highlighted the need to review the trade framework to overcome market-access barriers and boost competitiveness.
He urged Pakistani exporters to focus on higher value-added products like halal food, seafood, branded textiles, and leather goods. Emphasizing quality, branding, and compliance with international standards is crucial for competing in overseas markets. Qureshi pointed out opportunities in the digital economy, sustainable industries, and technology for joint ventures and investment.
He noted that Pakistan’s strategic location and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) could facilitate regional trade connectivity. He also advocated for stronger cooperation in education, professional training, research, and tourism, highlighting the role of Pakistani students studying in Malaysia. The PMFA has actively promoted bilateral engagement through business delegations and discussions across sectors. Qureshi concluded that sustained collaboration could strengthen economic ties and create new opportunities for both countries.
