The Indus Motor Company (IMC) celebrated 35 years of Toyota’s presence in Pakistan on May 15, 2026, commemorating its legacy of manufacturing excellence and localization with over 1.2 million vehicles sold. The event, held at Toyota’s plant in Port Qasim, Karachi, was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, as well as around 3,000 IMC employees.
Since its incorporation in 1989, IMC has grown from an annual production capacity of 5,000 to 76,000 vehicles, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s automotive industry and local engineering base. The company supplies over Rs 210 million worth of parts daily through a network of 58 authorized dealerships.
The Government of Pakistan’s support over the years was acknowledged, with the Ambassador highlighting Toyota as a symbol of the enduring Pakistan-Japan partnership. Mr. Hiroshi Nambu praised IMC’s commitment to quality and its Zero Defect status in audits. Mr. Shigeru Harada emphasized IMC’s localization efforts, which have saved Pakistan approximately USD 6.5 billion in foreign exchange.
IMC Chairman Mohamedali Rafiq Habib and CEO Ali Asghar Jamali discussed the company’s vision, substantial investments, and social initiatives benefiting over 200,000 people annually. Jamali stressed the need for a stable auto policy to foster industry growth and reduce reliance on imports. The celebration concluded with a tree-planting ceremony to mark the milestone.
Indus Motor Company was incorporated in 1989 as a joint venture between the House of Habib, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Toyota Motor Corporation, and is the authorized manufacturer and assembler of Toyota vehicles, parts, and accessories in Pakistan.
