Maritime Minister has intensified a harbour clean-up drive under the “Cleaner Port

Maritime Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has intensified a harbour clean-up drive under the “Cleaner Port, Healthier Marine Ecosystem” initiative to reduce marine pollution and protect coastal biodiversity. Over the first two weeks of May, the Karachi Port Trust removed more than 58,000 kg of solid waste from key locations in the harbour.

Chaudhry emphasized treating marine waste as a valuable resource for promoting a blue circular economy. Innovative practices, such as recycling used fishing nets and processing fish waste, can mitigate marine plastic leakage while creating economic opportunities for small and medium enterprises.

He noted that much of the marine debris originates from urban drainage systems and poses risks to biodiversity and fisheries. If sorted correctly, the collected waste could be valued at approximately USD 17,535. To maximize benefits, improved waste segregation and enhanced recycling infrastructure are essential. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting marine life and maintaining sustainable port environments through ongoing waste removal efforts.
