Stable cargo flows in the Port of Gothenburg in 1Q

Stable cargo flows in the Port of Gothenburg were seen in the first quarter despite a mixed performance. Container handling showed positive development in loaded cargo volumes, although the total number of containers handled decreased by 3 percent to 234,000 TEU.
This decline was attributed to fewer empty containers, with an increase in imports contributing to a better 50–50 balance between imports and exports, reducing the need for empty containers. Container volume development was uneven; March saw growth, while January and February had lower volumes.
Rail transport increased as well. Car handling significantly increased by 15 percent, with 71,000 cars processed, partly due to transshipment from congested ports. However, intra-European Ro/Ro traffic decreased by 2 percent due to vessel maintenance affecting capacity.
The Port, Sweden’s largest public energy port, experienced a 19 percent increase in energy product volumes, driven by strong demand and last year’s maintenance shutdowns, which affected comparison data. Dry bulk handling increased by 29 percent, driven by forest products. The cruise season began early, with a total passenger increase of 8 percent.
