Karachi Chamber appeals for relief in storage and demurrage charges at the port

Chairman of the Businessmen Group Zubair Motiwala and Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) President Muhammad Rehan Hanif have praised Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) leadership for providing relief in storage and demurrage charges at Karachi Port.

In a joint statement, they commended Minister Chaudhry for his timely measures to support exporters amid global shipping disruptions, particularly Gulf-bound shipments. They recognized KPT’s proactive engagement with terminal operators to implement these relief measures effectively. Notably, terminals like Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited and Karachi International Container Terminal agreed to significant concessions for export containers that faced delays. This initiative is expected to alleviate financial pressure on exporters dealing with rising logistics costs.

Motiwala and Hanif emphasized that such measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to maintaining Pakistan’s export competitiveness amidst challenges like global maritime disruptions. They expressed hope for continued collaboration between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, KPT, and stakeholders to enhance port efficiency and promote Pakistan’s blue economy. The leaders reiterated KCCI’s support for the government’s reforms and their commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and export-led development.
