Topline Pakistan Research has conducted a review of mobile phone production in the current century. Notably, local manufacturing and assembly of mobile phones in Pakistan increased by 4% year-over-year (YoY) in April and May 2025. According to the latest data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), local companies manufactured or assembled 4.84 million units during this period, up from 4.65 million units in the same months of 2024.
This brings the total number of locally manufactured or assembled mobile phone sales in 11MFY25 to 26.09 million units, reflecting a decline of 8% YoY. Similarly, in 5M2025, local sales reached 12.05 million units, also down 8% YoY.
The decline in mobile phone sales can be attributed to several factors:
– **High Base Effect from Last Year**: In 2024, the industry experienced exceptional sales, driven by pent-up demand following the easing of import restrictions.
– **Extended Mobile Replacement Cycle**: The average replacement cycle has increased from 2.5 years to 3.5 years, largely due to a lack of exciting new model launches.
– **Reduced Consumer Spending**: This has been driven by persistently high inflation and weaker economic conditions for rural populations and farmers.
Among the 12.05 million units of locally assembled mobile phones sold in 5M2025, 54% (6.53 million units) were 2G phones, while the remaining 46% (5.52 million units) were smartphones.
Pakistan managed to fulfil 94% of its mobile phone demand through local manufacturing and assembly in 5 M 2025. This is a significant increase compared to the five-year average (2020-2024) of 77% and a nine-year average (2016-2024) of 52%.
The top ten locally assembled brands during 5M2025 included:
- Infinix (1.34 million units)
- VGO Tel (1.33 million units)
- Itel (1.07 million units)
