SECMC, Pakistan’s pioneering coal mining company, has made history by becoming the first in the world to receive the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Gold Certification for its mining operations, highlighting its commitment to sustainable water management.
Founded in 2009, AWS promotes responsible water use globally, with over 330 certified sites across various sectors. The AWS Standard is based on five pillars: Good Water Governance, Sustainable Water Balance, Water Quality, Health of Water-Related Ecosystems, and Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
SECMC has integrated the AWS Standard into its operations in Thar Block II, aligning with international sustainability benchmarks. The company adheres to U.S. EPA standards and utilizes advanced infrastructure like Reverse Osmosis and Sewage Treatment Plants, treating over 43,000 cubic meters of water monthly for landscaping and operational needs, thus reducing reliance on freshwater sources.
Additionally, SECMC has launched a bio-saline agriculture program training over 100 local farmers to grow drought-resistant crops using modern irrigation techniques, transforming 65 acres of arid land into productive farmland. Through the Thar Foundation, the company has improved WASH access by installing 23 RO plants, providing clean drinking water to more than 5,400 residents, along with constructing over 600 sanitation units and conducting hygiene awareness sessions for over 3,000 schoolchildren.
Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, stated that achieving AWS Gold Certification reflects their commitment to responsible mining, resilient communities, and environmental sustainability.
